Signs of Spring

After the cold spells of winter we have recently enjoyed some good weather and seen the sun. The days are getting warmer and the snowdrops are giving a wonderful display. It is a sign that spring is getting closer, the spring flowers will gradually begin to show their wonderful colours and the dormant trees will spring to life. The frogs are stirring in our garden pond so we know it is the time of year for frog spawn.

It is rather like the words in the Song of Solomon, Ch 2, “See! The winter is past; the rains are over and gone. Flowers appear on the earth; the season of singing has come, the cooing of doves is heard in our land.”

As a lad, I enjoyed springtime on my father’s farm. Every year, the cowslips and primroses came out, the bluebells would fill the air with scent, and the warmth would bring the sounds of birds and insects. Spring is a time when we can see and hear more clearly the miracles of life around us. As we see these patterns we can observe how wonderful nature is. We can look to the sky and see the sun, the moon and the stars that continue day after day in the pattern of the universe.

King David wrote Psalm 19 praising God for his creation. “The heavens declare the glory of God; The skies proclaim the work of his hands.”

We too can reflect on these words and praise God for his creation. Even more so, because we are part of it.
