Lent - a Time to Give Up!

I have just witnessed and assisted in an historic event. For the first time, as far as I am aware, young people from different churches in Petersfield are taking part in coming together for 6 Monday evenings during Lent to explore the Easter Story using the BBC series The Passion. Leaders from four different churches are providing a time of fun, food, exploring and reflection to young people between the ages of 11 to 25.

Lent is the 40 days (excluding Sundays) prior to Holy Week Saturday, and Christians are invited to reflect on the Easter Story by attending Lent courses and studies. As part of Lent, we are also all invited to give up something to remind us that Jesus gave up so much for us – his life no less!

As a young person, I would often give up puddings or sweets, and save the money to give to the work of those in need. However, in the current financial climate, it may, for some of us, be difficult to know how much more we can give up financially, but one thing we may be able to afford is time! During this time of Lent, perhaps you could give up some time to visit an elderly, lonely or sick person, or, if you do not attend church, give an hour of your time to try out one of the local church services. You may be pleasantly surprised at how much better you will feel by giving up your time in one of these ways.
