Perfect Timing

What do first class ball players, top rate comedians and God all have in common? One answer would be 'perfect timing'! In sport success depends on striking the ball at just the right point in the swing or in comedy it is in delivering the punch line after just the right pause. And the God who lives outside of time does everything at 'just the right moment' even though this might be frustrating to us.

Couples of whom we read in the Bible, for example Abraham and Sarah, Elkanah and Hannah as well as Zechariah and Elizabeth, all godly people, must have wondered why their prayers for a family took so long to be answered whilst Mary, a young virgin, fell pregnant before her marriage to Joseph. It was a little while before Joseph was let in on the secret and he must have been devastated when he first heard her news. God must have had his reasons for keeping Joseph waiting but, as Paul put it in his letter to the Galatian Christians it was "when the time had fully come" that God sent forth his Son, Jesus. In other words, at just the right moment in history!

Throughout his life Jesus would say "My hour has not yet come" until moments before his arrest he said "Enough! The hour has come" (Mark chapter 14). He was led away and crucified so that we can know peace with God and new life in Christ.

Maybe this Christmas time will find you with an ache in your heart over some event that seemed untimely. Whether in birth or death or any event in between God's timing is perfect. With God, timing is more important than time! May He bless you this Christmas.
