The gift of gold

London 2012 is now over. Many of us have enjoyed watching a great spectacle. It was exciting, a great event and a triumph for so many athletes. We were able to celebrate with the GB medal winners and many other athletes in their great achievements.

It was interesting to see how athletes reacted after winning a gold medal. They celebrated the victory with family, friends and the crowds. The winners had achieved so much after going through hours, months and years of training. Now it had all been worthwhile and we were able to celebrate with them. I noticed that some of the winners got down on their hands and knees, others looked upwards with private thoughts, perhaps they were giving thanks to God. No success would have been possible without the gifts and talents they have been given and it appeared that many of them recognised this.

Let us all recognise that the success we may have in our lives is only possible due to the life and the talents we have been given when created by God.

We heard the theme tune of the film Chariots of Fire playing at the medal ceremonies. Reflect on the verse that was given to Eric Liddell on the athletics track in that film, "those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength, They will soar on wings like eagles, They will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint" (Isaiah chapter 40 verse 31)
