In Christ Alone

One of my most favourite Christian songs is "In Christ Alone" by Stuart Townsend.

I have sung along to this song in many church meetings over the past twelve or so years - but it wasn't until it was played at a dear lady's funeral service that I was truly impacted by the words in the final verse:-

It begins " No guilt in life, no fear in death,
This is the power of Christ in me;
From life's first cry to final breath,
Jesus commands my destiny."

What wonderful words! A real proclamation of a deep faith that this lady had in her Creator. In Hebrews 11 v 1 it says "Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see". This lady had a faith and a hope in where she was going to spend eternity. She had put her trust "In Christ Alone".

When faced with the death of a loved one, it makes us stop and think about our own mortality: what we are doing in this life and what will await for us when we die. My faith, like the lady I mentioned, is also in the power of Christ in me. I don't always get it right in my daily walk. I can think the wrong thoughts, say the wrong things, do the wrong things. But through faith I know that my sins are forgiven.

Wow! What an amazing thought! I cannot earn my way to heaven - the only way I'm going to go there is through believing on the name of Jesus Christ and believing what He did by taking all my sins to the cross. It is by faith and by the eternal grace of Christ Alone.
