The bigger picture

A dear elderly friend of mine now lives in a residential home where she is wonderfully cared for. Although she is developing dementia, we are still able to chat about this and that, mostly remembering happy events from her past.

We were sitting talking the other day when she suddenly put her head in her hands and said despairingly 'I don't know what to do, I don't understand.' Something had triggered an anxiety, and although we were soon reminiscing again, a couple more times during the morning she had the same upsetting experience. She was deeply worried that she should be doing something but unable to work out what it was. Because of her illness, she was missing the overview that I had, and could not understand the fact that she hasn't got to do anything at all, her family and the staff have got it all in hand, and everything is provided for her.

The next day I was at home praying about something that had been worrying me, and I found myself saying exactly the same words 'I don't know what to do, I don't understand' and I suddenly realised why Jesus said so often to his disciples 'don't be anxious'.

Just like my friend with dementia, I am lacking the overview that God has.

He can see the bigger picture, and he knows that he has got it all in hand and that everything is provided for me. I just need to trust him.
