Making a difference

When I answered the phone I heard, "I'm calling on behalf of.." I'm usually sympathetic to calls from charities but I can't support them all, however worthy they may be. I have done my share of 'doorstepping' for a charity and it grows harder each year. People have so many demands upon them now. I believe that we, as a society, are generous to those in real need, but how well will our donation be used? Should charities employ professional agencies to cold-call us or 'mug' us on the street? I avoid those that do this. We can check on how well charities use our cash. The information is on the internet.

Sometimes it seems there's too much need in the World and I ask myself what difference will it make if I help? We cannot possibly help everyone. Well, we must not feel guilty about that. (Generous people are prone to guilt!) You may know this story that follows. It encourages me to do the best I can.

An unusually high tide had left hundreds of starfish stranded at low-tide. As he strolled the beach, a man saw someone dashing about, picking up the stranded starfish and throwing them back into the water. The observer is puzzled and asks, "You cannot save them all and what difference will it make? There are just too many."

The other replied, "I know that but it will make a huge difference to THIS starfish!"
