The reason for the season

Yesterday was Shrove Tuesday or, as most people know it, Pancake Day . This has always been popular and is commonly marked with the fun of pancake races like the one we often have in Rams Walk. Following this, traditionally, there was a period of 40 days called Lent, as a preparation for the biggest Christian festival of Easter. During Lent Christians are encouraged to give up luxuries and prepare themselves spiritually for the coming of Easter.

Easter is the time to remember the most extraordinary event in the history of mankind. The man, Jesus of Nazareth, claimed to be the Son of God, performed miracles and healed many sick people. He was falsely convicted of blasphemy and brutally killed by a Roman death squad.

Then the miracle happened. Three days later people started reporting that Jesus of Nazareth was alive again, that God had resurrected him proving that what he said was true. People didn't believe it at first, of course. Dead bodies don't just come back to life. But Jesus appeared to over 3,000 people over a period of 40 days and it became obvious that something extraordinary had happened and that Jesus is alive. His followers declared that Jesus' death was to pay the price for the evil that we have all committed and that those who had faith in Jesus and followed his teaching would receive God's forgiveness and the promise of the eternal life that Jesus had. Many of his followers have been killed for following his teaching so they must have been pretty convinced of it.

Is all this true? Only you can decide, but millions of Christians all over the world have found Jesus to be alive today, and in following his teaching, have found a life and a purpose that has changed them forever.
