Back to school

Have you heard the great sigh rippling across this country this week? That is the collective sigh of “Back to School” week! However wonderful and fulfilling the holidays have been there is always something of a relief when the schools open again and draw their pupils back through their doors for another year... and if the summer holidays have been a difficult time of juggling child care with finding occupation for out of routine children and teenagers then the relief is even more pronounced.

This year children of the wider world have been brought starkly into our line of vision through the ever-present media. However occupied we may have been in the past weeks with children, grand-children or great–grandchildren it would have been hard to avoid seeing images of children in war torn countries like Yemen and Syria; children caught up in natural disasters in Sierra Leone and Bangladesh or children traumatized, injured or killed in the many terrorist atrocities that have scarred cities and holiday resorts this summer.

We may have tried not to look at these images feeling helpless in the face of such need. Yet there are things we can do which - while they may feel like a drop in the ocean – even so can be powerful as we reflect that even the mighty ocean is composed of tiny drops of water.

And finally we can care well for our own children even as we delight in the open school gates and appreciate the hard working teachers and school staff.

All are welcome to join members of Life Church Petersfield as they celebrate their 40th Anniversary on the Heath - Sunday 10 August 11:30 am to 2:30 pm
