A global revolution?

#metoo, #timesup, Harvey Weinstein, International Women’s Day: just a few of the recent hashtags, names and events which have come to exemplify what may just be a global revolution in the dialogue about women.

Last Sunday, I preached on this subject, as I believe the equality of sexes is a fundamental human reality. At the very first mention of people in the Bible (Genesis chapetr 1 verse 26) God says ‘let us make humankind in our image according to our likeness and let them have dominion… So, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.’ Women are created in the image of God – as men are; and both are given equal authority over the earth. That, I suggest, should be foundational for all Christians.

My talk caused a reaction – mainly from men! So, to the men reading this, I offer two things: First, if you struggle with the ‘Me Too’ movement or with ‘International Women’s Day’ or the whole concept of feminism, have you asked why? Have you considered what buttons are being pushed in you and what really underlies your responses? Second, we need to listen. Listen to the stories told by women: what they experience, what they feel, what life is like from their perspective. Explore online or, better still, ask those you know.

The gospels have many examples of Jesus dealing with women as equals: befriending, empowering and setting them free (and all this in an extremely patriarchal society). As a follower, or apprentice, of Jesus, it is his example I seek to emulate. The church and society still have a long way to go, but it is my prayer that the current discussions will take us closer to a more equal and fairer world. A more Christlike world.
