A Mustard Seed

Recently a friend of mine suffered a great disappointment. Something which had been planned for at least a year was thwarted at the last minute and there was nothing that could be done to resolve the situation.

We have all had disappointments in life. It could be that someone close to us has a serious illness. Perhaps we have lost the job which we loved. Marriage breakdowns or the death of a loved one bring us heartache. None of us are immune to the things which life throws at us but how do we cope in these situations.

Some people turn to alcohol or non prescription drugs. Others become depressed and turn away from their friends and family. I will confess that for me when things are tough I reach for the largest bar of chocolate that I can find.

I have had a chorus playing in my mind from Sunday school days which says “faith as small as a mustard seed can move mountains”.

Jesus spoke of the mustard seed in Matthew Chapter 13. The mustard seed is so small that the slightest puff of wind will blow it away. However if the conditions are right the seed will send out roots to anchor it firmly in the soil. Then it sends out shoots which, over time, transform this tiny seedling into a mighty tree. When the strong winds blow it merely bends the branches.

I believe that what Jesus is saying is that if we plant ourselves in his teachings then we will be able to weather the storms of life. Remember he will carry us through the tough times when we need it.

I know that my friend has a strong faith and although this disappointment has shaken her she will look for Gods purpose in what she does next.

The next Women's Brunch will be on Saturday 20 October at Herne Farm Leisure Centre
