31 October 2018: Rev’d Joshua Thomas – Petersfield and Liss United Reformed Church

Strength of community

As many of you will know, Petersfield and Liss United Reformed Church have had a fairly long vacancy. But in June of this year my family and I moved to Petersfield and I have taken on the role as minister.

I grew up not far away in Waterlooville and so I had the benefit of knowing a little bit about the town before moving here. But as with many places, you don’t really know somewhere until you actually put down roots and live there for a little while.

We were excited for this new chapter, but slightly nervous as to how we would settle in, whether we would make new friends and all the other slight concerns you have when you up sticks and move somewhere new.

We needn’t have worried though, since arriving, we have found Petersfield to be a wonderfully warm and welcoming town and our new church feels just like an extended family. Through things such as Petersfield Pulse we find out all about the many events in the town and with all the beautiful countryside around us, there is always somewhere new to go and see.

We do community pretty well in this town I think. This sense of good community is important, not only in our lives now, but it features heavily in the Bible too. Jesus called together a group of followers, friends to share the journey with, and throughout the book of Acts, we are reminded of just how important community was to the early church, who met regularly and shared all things in common. Kind actions that benefit our community may seem small to us, but they can mean a great deal to someone else.

Keep up the good work Petersfield!

IMC are organising a Quiz Night at the Methodist Church Hall on Friday 2 December - teams of up to six can take part.
